He likes to hang out in the bottom part of the house, though he'll also rest in the top part from time to time. Here's a pic of the handsome McQueen himself: And my currently empty ten gallon. Can you tell it's my 3 yr old's tank? haha. I think I'm going to use it for a quarantine tank now, instead of the 23 gallon. I will pull the current ornaments out and put some different ones before I get my BN pleco though (like driftwood for it to eat, and a cave to hide in). I was going to put some plants in it but am going to wait awhile.

Yeah, they do make some incredible roots! I may add some more sand in the future, too...not sure. It is pretty expensive (well, I guess I could go to a building store and get sand, rather than the pet store stuff?), but my corys and loaches really like it. They spend some time just rest in the bottom or the loaches will flip sand around with their front fins. Really cute.
Thanks for the suggestions - I might try tying the Java fern to the wood, somewhere. No, it hasn't put out any little babies on the ends; I've had it for several months now, I think. The sword plants have, though! Within the first few weeks of having them, I had 3 or 4 more! The one with the narrower leaves really seems to grow fast. It was pretty small when I got it. I'll have to look up the cryptocorynes and see what they look like. I would like to add some different plants, for sure.
Yes, the lid to the betta tank is clear, so it's hard to see in that pic. It's a solid plastic lid w/a small hole (like, too small for him to get out) for dropping food in, and a spot for the filter that fits really tightly. Hopefully we won't have any problems with him disappearing!
BTW, I'm curious, he seems to have lightened in color some since I got him...that doesn't indicate a health problem, does it?? He was a darker red originally. Now he seems more white -?
I very nearly bought another betta last night. There were 4 at WalMart; one had a yellowish/orange tail and a blackish body (not dark black...hard to explain...kind of greyish/black) and was really cute. I was tempted, but in the end common sense prevailed and I didn't get him.
