I bought very large pieces of decorations for my cichlid tank. I have white holey rock but wanted bigger holes. The real rock is so expensive that I decided
to buy the plastic pieces. Still pricey at 40 + but much lighter in weight for water changes. I syphon my gravel weekly so moving decorations is difficult
since cichlids need so many "condos".
I have 12 cichlids and 2 clown loaches in a 90 gal tank.
The plastic pieces have holes and water gets inside the pieces. So when taking them out of the tank, I have to drain them first. Wellllll. After the tank was 50% void of decorations I started counting heads as they scurried for cover from the syphon. 1 cichlid and both clown loaches were missing!! GET THE DECORATIONS BACK IN THE TANK!!! Sure enough, cichlid was in one piece. How he survived 30 minutes is beyond me. Bless his heart.
One clown loach is okay and now has been transferred to the community tank that does not have plastic decorations. The other clown loach we've been trying to shake out of the fake wood piece for 2 days. He's probably dead and stuck. I am sick over this.
Why do they make decorations that fish can get up into? Either getting stuck or in my case exposed to time out of the tank? The cichlid is 4 inches. There should be no inner holes that he can get into. Swim holes through a decoration are one thing, but into a decoration where they can't get turned around? geez
I wanted to warn others who are as blindly stupid as I am. I figure if its made for fish, sold in a fish store, then its safe for fish. Evidently not from me.
