Yes, these type of thoughts typically come to me while washing my hair in the shower but nonetheless, this one came and delayed my beauty sleep. In my obsessive nature to learn all things fishy. Here is the plan. Ask a question regarding any aquarium related information and lets find the answers. You can know the answer or maybe it is something you are curious about. Learning and sharing is what it is all about. The person that answers the question, asks the next question. So, since it is my game, I will start Can you name 4 types of livebearers?

It is present wherever freshwater meets with salt water. Such as where a river leads into the ocean. The salt content of brackish water is elevated by the mixing of FW and SW so naturally the salt content is higher then fresh water but lower then the ocean's salt content. Brackish water is home to some stunning fish and plant life only found in this biotope, but there are many species of plants and animals that cross over from one type of water too another these include mollies. My three favorite BW fish are: Dusky Panther Goby (Neovespicula depressifrons) Mono Sebae (Monodactylus sebae) Figure 8 Puffer (Tetraodon biocellatus) My question... what are three fish/animals that call New Caledonia home, and what are their particularities?

I may get the wrong ones! Cagou, of course, this is the national symbol (Bird) Chiropters, these are the only local mammals (Bats) The third one is either the Giant Gecko or the Emperor Shrimp..... Read More (yeah, I cheated, but not altogether, and Shelly did not say one cannot search...). If this is ok, how about the smallest fish?

Quite common in the small creeks Giant Mottled Eel--Adults have a brownish to black marbling on their back on a greyish yellow background.--Found in lowland rivers as well as upland tributaries Immaculate Puffer--Body covered with prickles. Dark bars on side of head and below pectoral fins--Inhabits weedy areas, often in estuaries, seagrass beds and mangrove areas. Ok, so how big can the giant betta splendens get and specifically what type of betta is it?

Your answer for the smallest fish was fine, the expected one..... it is Betta Splendens that I hear all the time about lately, it became a major topic of discussions in the local club too lately.

Mike, while bettas are very common, their personality is incrediable. The best way I can describe it is--if you blow a fishy kiss, a betta will blow one back. The interaction is more pronounced than any other fish I have kept including cichlids. The only other fish that would have a comparable interaction would probably be an oscar. I guarantee that if you got a betta, you will be hooked. Although I know that they aren't your style. There is a reason we have so many bettaholics on the board....

I'm going to totally suck at this one but I saw research is allowed. Whew! And maybe I'll learn something in the process. I've never heard of a Giant Betta Splendens. So curiousity killed this cat and I was amazed at what I found!! And, oh yeah, the answer! Is this correct? Giant: 6.6 cm (approximately 2-5/8 inches) , snout to the base of the caudal fin I found it here: http://bettysplendens.com...s/page.imp?articleid=1405 I cannot believe the pictures! The Giant Bettas are Plakats vs. Halfmoons, Deltas etc. I can't find the link anymore but there were ones reported to be 5 inches from snout to end of caudal fin. BTW I LOVE the Buffy link! Now Uyek gets to come up with a question and maybe we can get this thread rollin' again.

What fishy fossil appears to illustrate the transition between fish and tetrapods, four-legged animals? And what skeletal feature does it share with mammals? Hint: If you listen to Quirks and Quarks or have read Neil Shubin's interesting book, Your Inner Fish, this may be familiar.

It is wierd to see a big betta alongside a more usual size. It looks like a giant. Oscars get the winning score for interactivity as you can teach them lots of tricks (yes, they remember them . . . most of the time anyway at least when they want food). Bettas running a close second for fishy human manipulation activities ie: Will you give me food if I behave in a cute manner? t
