His water parameters are: pH 8.0 and no ammonia. I know that's a little high, but I had to switch to tap water.

His favorite place is in between the fronds of his fern. He likes to swim in and out between them, or just rest there between them. He sleeps in his skull at
night though.

Lovely tank Candy! He's pretty lucky!
Most bettas will adapt to just about any pH range... as long as it remains consistant. Has there been any fluctuations (i.e. different water sources used)? The decorations are lovely! Just watch for sharp or rough edges on both the artificial plants and the "house"... as they can scrape or cut themselves wilst swimming through or around. I still don't know why they're even made like this??? Michele |

NEVER buy those seaweed decorations!! It says to soak them for 24 hours before putting them into the tank to get rid of excess dye.
Well I did soak them, and they are still releasing color into the water. Little pieces break off and float to the surface too. They are a pain in the you-know-what. Just a warning to anyone thinking of buying some. |

Thanks for the warning Candy!
If this is the case... I'd remove it (of course), and do a complete waterchange (same temp/pH) to remove any residual dyes (toxins) from this product. It would also be beneficial to inform the manufacturer that you are very displeased with this product. Thanks for letting us know! I hope your betta will be okay!! Keep us posted, ok? Michele |

Also, I would try to get a refund. That is not acceptable for a fish tank item.

Pongo's digs..... | ||

Here's a pic of my Pongo's 2.5g tank with 4 watts of light per gallon--that ought to get the plants "a growin'" don't you think? I
put a better pic of Pongo on the betta gallery thread.

Lovely tank, Pegzee! The plants look great! Pongo's one lucky guy! I'm popping over to the betta gallery to have a closer look at Pongo (who looks
like my Jelly Bean)!

Nice tank Pegzee. How do you anchor your java fern? It looks like it's in a saucer, inside a larger saucer but I can't make it out. I want to buy some
more java fern and have elaborate ideas of making tiny net bags of stones to hold it down...

Hi Jen. I actually got it from my supplier that way. It is in one of those standard black plastic plant pots. I may take it out because I was told that Java
Fern's roots need to be exposed. I like your idea about net bags with stones. Especially if the net bag you use could be a clear nylon. It would look just
like the plant was anchored in the stones. Neat idea! Alot of folks just use fishing line to attach it to rock or drift wood. Eventually the roots cling to the
rock or wood.

It would be black nylon netting which would go with my color scheme. I don't use driftwood because it alters the PH in my 5.5 gallon tank and I can't
get fishing line to adhere to river rock. I do have some gray slate left over (long story soon to be posted in the DIY forum) that I could break up and use.
Fishing line may adhere better to that than river rock.

I like your idea of a black net bag the best. Is river rock rough or smooth. I think they need roughness to grab onto.

I just thought of something. What about filling a net bag with a few stones for weight and then the rest of the way with Java moss, then put the Java fern on
that. That may be really cool.

River rock is very smooth and polished by the water which is why the fishing line keeps slipping off. I've never owned java moss. (I can't find it
around here and I don't have enough volume to pay for shipping costs.) It sounds like a cool idea but doesn't java moss grow rather quickly?

It does grow fairly quick but it could be easily trimmed if in a net bag!

I've noticed that all of the posted tanks above have actual gravel of some sort. When setting up my tanks I decided to use the jewel looking stones (blue
hues mostly) And I really liked the way the tanks looked, until I saw haw amazing ya'lls tanks look!!! What are the pros/cons to using Gravel vs. jewel
stones? I chose the stones because I thought the gravel would be to hard to keep clean. I dont want all of the poo and uneaten food hiding out in there!!
Thanks. And will upload some pics of our tanks soon! |

Hey Tabitha,
It's really personal preference. Many like their tanks to look "natural"... so using natural gravel or sand achieves that. For 100% waterchange tanks, gravel would be easier to rinse on your regular waterchange day (to get rid of poo and any uneaten food - although uneaten food should be removed immediately with a dedicated/never seen soap turkey baster). It's best to go with "natural", uncoated gravel if you go this route... the coloured gravel available tend to flake off after some time, and some brands have been known to cause pH fluctuations. I have a happy fella!! | ||

I'm sorry these are fuzzy - Frodo kept swimming around so much, and the light wasn't on his tank last night. I divided a new 10g tank diagonally down
the center with a piece of thin plexiglass - I snagged an old poster frame from Goodwill and cleaned the plexi, then cut to size with a utility knife - then
added 2 mini-filters with 1 pump with lines for 2 air-tubes for even circulation. I "planted" this tank with an inch or so of potting soil, then
added regular small gravel, then on "Frodo's side" added a layer of black gravel (chain-store brand).
I filled it up, let the water rest, drained it, filled it & rested it again to air out the bubbles, then put Frodo and his "wife" Sprite in, one on each side. I mean for them to live there together for life whether they ever spawn or not. They are a beautifully matched pair. I couldn't get a pic of Sprite in here yet though. Overnight this little guy went to town building a HUGE bubblenest. The two of them swim together across the diagonal divider and flirt plenty.
