Hi! I'm pretty new to the group and I have been doing a little reading here and there on plants. I read that they help improve water conditions and that some fish actually prefer to have them in the tank especially tetras and betta fish. So I went out last night while I was shopping for decorations for 2 new 5 gallon tanks that I am starting and I bought a few plants for them. I've set the tank up and placed the plants in regular gravel, as the lady at the pet store had said. I asked if I should be looking into a different substrate for them, but she assured me normal gravel would be alright, is this correct? I've also read that plants need special nutrients so I'm wondering what all of you would recommend. I bought some water wisteria 2 bunches, 1 cambodia plant and some dwarf grass. I have a 15 watt florescent bulb for each tank that should give them 3 wpg, right? I didn't buy anything for them yet because I wasn't sure what I would need to keep them healthy. Any suggestions? Oh and has anyone had Afzelii before? Do they produce a white flower? I saw a picture on the net and it looked like they had a white flower that looked like a lily, very pretty. Would those be safe for fish? I plan to put a male betta in this tank once it's cycled.
