That's spiffy. Wish it covered more brands, though.

Hmmm interesting. I always thought that fluval external canister filters were pretty good. According to this tho.. not so much? asti |

I thought so too. Do you mean the Fluval gpH rates or something else?

Re: Canister Filters Comparison

Yeah, was talking about gpH rates. Smallest eheim is way way higher gpH then the fluval that's supposed to handle the same size tank. Wouldn't that mean that it's just as efficient as a larger size fluval on a larger tank? Does that even make sense? What im trying to say is that if it has a higher gph rate, in theory, you could use the smallest eheim on like a 40-50g tank easily right? Since you need a lot larger fluval to get the same gph rate. asti |

Re: Canister Filters Comparison

That makes sense.
If do always worry if products will live up to their manufacturer ratings so I try to make sure I have one that is powerful enough gpH-wise just in case. In addition, I love to overfilter (as long as the fish can handle the current) so I would choose one that gives the most possible gpH for your buck. However, it is also important to look at how they are constructed and pick the one with a mechanism/design that you feel good about. We did a lot of researching on the 'net once we figured out what our competing few models were and then took a look at the specific filter samples in the local stores to see them in person. Do you have any stores nearby that keep floor samples out (or might open a few boxes to show you the filters) once you have three or four models narrowed down? t |

Heheh yeah we do. I don't like canister filters, altho i am considering getting one... I find it too much hastle to clean (yea i know it doesn't have to be as often as what im doing currently) and eheim's media is waaaay too pricey for me. So was thinking fluval, but after seeing that i'm not so sure anymore.... I liked fluval canisters cause you don't need to stick with their media, since they have those little buckets. asti |

Have you considered the Rena Filstars? We have two of them and they have been really reliable plus you can use whatever media you want.

So, t, you like the Rena's? I was looking at one but figured Marineland might be better - if you trust it then I may take the other back since there was a
huge price difference.

Yes, I have not had any problems with my Renas. I would go for the XP3 (which I have used for several years now) or the newer XP4 because it can't ever
hurt to overfilter a tank.

Very cool. I may just do that. Thanks!

H m m m . . . I made a bit of a blanket-statement I should probably have said that the XP4 would be great for a larger tank but some fish don't like
currents so if the XP4 was in a small tank it could be a problem for them.
