I'm going to get a 20gal long tank at Christmas to transfer my ADF's into and also get a few fish. I want to keep the 10gal in operation for the betta and snail, and also as a quarantine for new ADF's for Chytrid (since it's not transmittable to the Betta or snail). So this is my question: Can I add the new filter to my 10gal, in order to catch the good bacteria, before putting it on the 20gal? Or would 60gal of filtering be too much for a 10gal (each filter is for 30gal)? If it is okay, how longer beforehand should I put it on the 10gal? I won't be moving anyone until the 20 is cycled. Just wondering how long is long enough for the filter media to catch the good bacteria and help the 20 cycle?
Or is the better option to take one of the 3 filter medias (carbon, biomax and sponge) from the 10gal tank and switch it with the same media from the new tank? That way I don't ruin the 10gal's cycle but the 20gal gets good bacteria?
I appreciate your advice. I want to do things right this time!!
