I'm very sorry that your frog passed away, Vanessa. image

I'm not sure if the yogurt "did him in" or the stress of trying to force-feed him along with the injury. Did the fish store employee actually advise you to "force feed" him yogurt and peas? I know it's too late but I have to say that most of us have learned to take the advice from fish store workers very skeptically. If an animal (fish/frog/mammal) is ill enough not to eat... I wouldn't force-feed them... this would cause stress and possibly exacerbate the situation, which may have happened in this case.

Also... the employee may have been grasping at straws here with a diagnosis of a burn from the heater. Was the spot red at all?

Pimafix, not medicinal but herbal, we have found, works no better than pristine water. You may have thought that over the past year... everything was going fine... but with prolonged exposure to even small amounts of ammonia and nitrites could very well be the bottom line here. Poor water quality is really the root of evils in the aquarium world. They may appear to be doing fine - the water is clear (measurable ammonia and nitrites are often present even in crystal clear water) - but slowly they change... become less active... may eat less... have trouble breathing... and may develop ulcers, burns (ammonia burns more likely), and lesions, and may even pass away.

The members, mods and admins here on this board have loads of actual experience keeping these wonderful creatures. We have nothing to gain by giving our advice other than seeing that your beloved fish/frog gets better. There are good lfs employees that know their stuff... but they are few and far between unfortunately.

As well... the 1" per gallon rule doesn't take into account the waste they produce. Some large fish don't produce that much waste but need the room to swim.... while some tiny fish are huge waste producers and need more than the 1" per gallon rule. Plecos are actually an amazing little creature... but many lfs employees don't really take into account how much waste they produce when they are recommending them for algae cleanup, nor how big they can get (or they do know... and hope you come back for a bigger tank once you find you need one... along with the supplies, etc.)

I'm so sorry this happened to you and your frog. Please do get those test kits... they're super important - the rest of your fish require the same excellent water quality that your frog did. Have a read through the linked articles on the previous page and ask any questions you may have... we'll answer the best we can. Good luck in the future!

Swim free now little Ford...

Michele
