As I mentioned substrate can be Flourite (but EcoComplete would be great too).

You can also use plain gravel if you wish, but the two I named are much better for plants. One caution is that I personally would not use Flourite if you're going to have corys in the tank, since I feel it's a bit sharp for their sensitive barbels. Eco Complete is smooth and round.

None of my plants are free floating. The Anubias and Java fern were tied to a piece of driftwood and are now rooted to it.
