Welcome to FnF from me too! I agree with Shelly... I wouldn't even bother with the filter b/c it will just gunk up the water too quickly. Bettas have a labrynth organ so they don't require water filtration to breath. They need air above the water line though. Unfortunately, it's sometimes hard to distinguish velvet (linked to above in Shelly's post). Many bettas have a natural "shimmer" to them. You would look for something that has changed recently... as well... other symptoms would include lethargy, lack of appetite or none at all, goldish/rusty/silverish dusting... and they may start to dart about like Shelly described... appearing to be scratching themselves against things or tank walls. His behaviour could also be the result of ammonia exposure as Shelly also mentioned. If by improving the water quality... his behaviour doesn't improve... then you may consider adding RidIch+ OR Maracide to his tank. Also... without a heater... he may be lethargic from possibly cooler temps (or even too hot temps). Bettas need a temp of around 75-80F... but heating a 1 gallon with a good quality commercial heater is not safe. The heat of the lamp is good for short term... but once the light goes off... the water will cool... and temp fluctuations can lead to them being stressed (and then opening them up to diseases). I have/do heat a 2 gallon tank with a good quality 25watt heater safely. As well... please have a read through our Betta FAQ's and caresheet for further information. He is a lovely boy! Feel free to show him off and gush with us in the Betta Forum. I hope he'll be okay with better water conditions! Michele
