I know they seem small, mongo... but they really do produce a lot of waste. The more water volume... the more diluted their waste will be. Not to mention... goldfish, like any other fish, need swimming room.... they won't be very happy if kept in confined quarters where they have little room to swim back and forth.

But water quality really is the biggest issue here. Fish produce ammonia through their respiration and poo. In a small tank... the ammonia is too concentrated and will literally burn them, and make it hard for them to breath.

Goldfish living in a tiny bowl or tank without oxygenation is really not a great way to live... IF they survive it.

Let us know if you are willing to make a better home for them... we'll help you along the way...
