I was just wondering, there is no mention of filters. Should filtration systems be thrown out? Or just cleaned?

I have a setup which is a 2.5 gal jar. This housed an ADF I purchased from azgardens.com with a trumpet snail, moss balls, anubias, java ferns and banana lily.
Substrate is gravel, and rocks and grapevine driftwood as decorations. ADF from azg was always healthy and survived low temps and periods of no feeding. It
disappeared when I left for vacation (died of starvation, cold temp, or maybe chytrid? or did it escape the jar?). Prior to this, I have housed other ADFs from
Petsmart and Walmart, who died within a few weeks (total about 4 other ADFs).
My ADF (from azg) rised to the surface when he sensed me in the room, he would be ready for feeding, and for me to play with it with a plastic spoon (funny moment). No signs of chytrid. The other ADF's would not eat, always hidden, tried to bury themselves in the driftwood, gravel or plants, pale colored (almost liked about to shed). My azg adf nonetheless remained active, outgoing and ready to eat. Its been since Jan 08, that the jar has left alone minus the the frogs, trumpet pond snail, and driftwood (I only changed the h2o 2x since). Its been like that all this time. REMEMBER: I was down south for 2 weeks, and came back to see no sign or evidence of a frog in there (jumped out, or died). I have no other pets that could have eaten him. My question is, knowing the frogs from petsmart and walmart could've had Chytrid infectionand my azg frog remained healthy even before I left on vacation, is there any Chytrid fungus left in the jar or spores? will i have to discard plants and substrate and nuke it?

Addition to my post above:
Since the jar has been sitting there w/o frogs since Jan 08, could there still be C. Fungus or Spores in the water, substrate, plants, snail, or decor? I checked around the room and there were no signs of a carcass of a frog. I asked my fam if they might have removed the frog and they all replied no. Kind of a freaky disappearance. |

Question JBot or any experts:
Knowing that ADF's will eat when given 10:1 water and pedialyte (non flavored) bath. Will feeding the frogs food that will strengthen the immune system will help it fight the fungus with more strength? Like adding vitamins and minerals to ADF's food, mainly vitamin C or any other pro-immune system boosters. |

Did yu have a lid or screen on top of the jar? ADFs are very sensitive and i don't know how much change in temp yours went through but they like stable
temps around 78. I am guessing he escaped and passwed away, Was he fed while you were gone at all, did anyone in your home look after him? ANyway, that is in
the past, but I would personally toss everything in the tank and nuke the tank itself as a precaution, The spores will survive for quite a while in the tank. I
know this sucks, I've been there. Make sure you dispose of everything correctly because you could easily spread the chytrid just by dumping the tank decor
and plants in the garbage or down the drain.
As for your last question, I am not sure of your previous circumstances or advice already given but usually pedialyte is a temporary measure when frogs are not eating. I don't know that they should be given pedialyte and food at the same time. I will leave this to JBOT or Mac beacsue they are the adf experts but in my experience.... Of course we want our frogs to be healthy but chytrid is so swift, I don't think the frogs can easily fight it off. Thats just my 2 cents worth. SailAwayAK: I am not up to date on the adf fourm, did you just have chytrid or suspected chytrid in your tank? then I would nuke the filter and get a new filter sponge Stephanie |

I moved the last several posts over to this new thread so that we can go more in depth with
josealmighty's specific issues.

Stephanie, I was asking this because it wasn't really specified in the write ups. I have a fellow teacher at school with an ADF and I have just been caring
for her. I have no plans to bring her home with me because I worry about the possibility of spreading the problems to her ADF. However I was at a LFS and they
had some new little ADF's that were not looking so hot.

Disposal issue in case this never came up. My frogs have all the symptoms and already lost about 70% of 20 dwarf frogs. They went from singing and mating to
permanent shut down within a few weeks. Water stats all good. The rest with symptoms i been treating with raising water temperature, and dips in high
concentrations of Malachite Green (which is all i have on hand)with recomended dose of it in the tank water and also adding unrefined sea salt. So far some
of the frogs are going back to the bottom every now and then ,but i'm not getting my hopes up.Benzalkonium Chloride is on the way but i have already
checked these remaining frogs off the list. Before i did research on the Chytrid fungus, i was just flushing the diseased down my septic system in which is
now getting treated with Ammonium Chloride to hopefully kill what killed my little frogs and to stop spreading contamination. Now i'm freezing the
bodies to send some for testing and the others i will have to properly dispose of with cremation an option or disinfectant soak, very unpleasant morbid
chore. This fungus is a serous eco threat to our native amphibian population and we need to make sure it is contained including water, gravel, plants or
anything else that could be infected. Any suggestions or comments on how to contain this threat and getting the word out to pet shops and the suppliers? I
hate to think what would happen if this fungus ended up in our big waters if not already. Thanks for reading.

Okay, is there anywhere else I can order this stuff from? Fishfarmacy.com doesn't seem to exist right now, and NationalFishPharmacy.com does not have a
search bar :/

I am so glad I found this site. I love frogs and last month i purchased 4 of them. I bought them a 27 gallon tank to house them all. My daughter thought
they would be lonely in that tank by themselves so i added a few fish. To my horror starting a few weeks ago they have been starting to missing hands losing
their appetites and dying. One by One i have been sticking them in the hospital tank spending tons of money at these stupid pet stores trying to figure out
what the problem is they would sell you all kind of useless crap. I even had one guy tell me the frogs have ick when i know frogs don't get ick. I have
spent my entire vacation and sleepless nights trying to figure out what's wrong with the frogs. Tuesday my niece and I drove an hour away for medication
that none of the local stores had in stock. Then today wits end left a question on yahoo and someone left the answer Chytrid Fungus. After stumbling on
this fourm hopfully I can save the remaining two. I have never heard of this fungus and I am shocked none of the ADF sites even mention it. I just sent my
daughter to the store to get the Lamisil so please wish me luck. I am not going to bother attempting clean that other tank out I will just buy them a new home
don't want to even risk them getting sick again.

Hi there - so sorry you've been going through so much with your froggies.
In order to find out what happened to them, it's very important you fill out the following questionnaire. This way we can get all the questions answered at once and know immediately if the problem is an uncycled tank, aggressive fish species, etc. Here's the link: http://flippersnfins.yuku.com/topic/711 |

I know this treatment was started in the 1990's but with all these new bacterial soaps that would probably be better on the frogs does anyone know if they
work.

I have been doing this treatment with the Lamisil 1% spray since Saturday. I am very hopfull it will work but I still have my fingers crossed. The yellow stuff
that was on their backs seem to be coming off little by little. The one that lost his hand doesn't seem to be getting worst. They both are still not eating
at least i don't think. They are both still in the hospital tank which I have moved upstairs into my room so they can have some quiet time. Today will make
day 3 of the treatment.

:'0) today I went to go check on them and the both have passed on. I can't deal with such heartache so this will be my last try at raising frogs. I
wish you all the best of luck with you're frogs. This is way to painful.

I swear these Frogs are going to give me a heart attack. My daughter just informed me that the frogs are still alive and swimming around. I am so happy and
glad. I may have to change their names from Kermit and Miss Piggie to Criss and Blaine or something like that.
