Ghost Shrimp? |
Lead | |
|
I am planning on getting ghost shrimp to feed to my axolotls. After quarantine, would it be okay to keep a colony in with my ADF's and betta? I can only QT
a couple shrimp at a time, since all I have is a small little tank that's empty. So if I could get them breeding that would be awesome. Then I could
occasionally scoop out a couple and plop them into the axie tank.
Any thoughts? |

I have kept bettas and tried a few times to put ghost shrimp in with both male and female bettas, and every time the bettas ate the shrimp

ADF's can also eat ghost shrimp. I have seen my bettas eat ghost shrimp as well. |

If they eat them, that's okay with me. I am buying them with the intention of feeding them, but I figure if I have some in both tanks my chances of having
them breed will go up. But if not, oh well. I guess I was mostly asking if it was safe. Like the shrimp won't try to munch on my froggers, will they? And
what about a full grown shrimp, wouldn't that be a bit big for the ADF's? I would almost be proud if my betta ate a shrimp. The idea of him bothering
anything and even being aggressive is funny. I think I have the most passive fish, EVER. -_-

I'd be a bit concerned if frogs ate one. It would be a big meal and since they are prone to blockages I don't think it would be a great mix. No, the
shrimp wouldn't bother a betta or froggers. You'd be surprised how the natural instinct of yummy food would get a betta all excited. What size is
your QT tank?

Well I have two medium or large Critter Keeper type deals, and I also have two good sized storage bins that the axolotls lived in when they first got here and
their tank was cycling.
I was once told that L x H x W divided by 231 gave you how many gallons. So I have to measure everything and figure it out. The only issue is I only have one little air pump. My boys are still a little on the small side. Do you think I should try one larger ghost shrimp and see how everyone in there does? Also, if I can find a nice 5 or 6 gallon, I think I am going to move everyone into it. I would not have shrimp in a 5 gallon. I will also not be looking for a female ADF. I guess I'll never hear the lovely singing the boys do. But if I got a 5 gallon I could move them into the living room. With three frogs and a betta, everyone would have over a gallon, and maybe the frogs would come out more. And no one see's my pretty betta in my room! But no hexagons and only if I can find one with a lot of foot space and a reasonable filter. |

You'd want a 10g tank to house 3 frogs and a betta. They all need 2.5g each. A large KK is plenty big enough for a colony of shrimp. An airpump with
some filter floss/sponge tied with some fishing line around it would work as a filter for them. I agree, hex tanks are a pain and the frogs would appreciate
the floor plan of a 10g rectangular tank over the depth of the hex.

I was told on the Caudata.org forums that you can only keep a couple in a KK, but, I have a dozen in each. Sue me. They are feeder shrimp. Lol. I have jars in
there, air stones, and feed them Hikari brine shrimp. Which they LOVE. What I love about Hikari is that the brine shrimp actually has little visible shrimp in
it. You can't go wrong with their frozen foods ;] I don't have any sort of filter worked out for them yet. For the time being I will clean it with a
turkey baster and 100% weekly changes. This time next month I will be adding some to the tanks.
Just out of curiosity, what kinds of things can happen if someone didn't QT? I had someone tell me it's important to QT fish, but that inverts can't really transfer parasites and such. I know where I got mine they were in a tank by themselves, unlike at work where they are in a small KK in the same water as the frogs and the fish. So chytrid would scare me, and if any of the fish got ick or something, that would freak me out. So what risks exactly do the shrimp pose? [Don't worry, they will remain in QT! I am just looking to learn!] |

I don't think the shrimp carry disease that could be transferred but the water they come in can certainly be an issue. Cross contam (including employee
hands) and multi-tank filter systems would be the biggest risks.

Well I poured them into a net and then moved them to the QT tanks. When should they be safe?

I'd say 2 weeks. How are they doing?

They are actually doing pretty well. I have only lost one. I haven't had any light on them, which they seem to like. It keeps their water cooler, but they
are going into 68F water, so they better get used to it. Haha. They really love Hikari frozen brine shrimp. The actual pieces of shrimp get snatched up really
fast and they run and hide to eat. It's pretty interesting. I am trying to ignore them as much as possible though so I don't get attached :P
2 weeks sounds awesome. |
