Hello, I'm Syd, and I'm addicted to bettas.

In my defense, I had to have him. He was in a teeny tiny little cup (the betta cups the LFS uses are about a third of the size the ones the local Wal-Mart uses), flaring his little head off at his reflection in the back mirror. He was happy and healthy and his fins were absolutely glorious. Another fish, naturally, meant another fish...

I dont know...but I think he may have fin rot??

Last week I finally got a new girl betta after losing Harley and Jasmine earlier this year to mystery illnesses. She was still young and tiny, more thin than small. I put her in the tank next to my crowntail Chloe. She was a sand color with green/blue iridescent fins, her caudal fin had a touch of crimson in the center. I bought blood worms for my Betta and I have no clue how to prep them or how many to give. I took a cube and soaked it in treated water. Is this all I have to do? Thanks!

Do I have a problem w/ my water? I'm just starting out w/ a Betta. He's currently in a 1/2 gallon Betta kit, but will be moved to a larger tank soon. I'm trying to make his time left in this tiny bowl as comfortable as possible. I was using Poland Springs bottled spring water. I had the bottled water tested at PetSmart, but was told to use tap water w/ a conditioner. So I bought a water testing kit, changed the water, conditioned it and here are the results...

Filter or no?

I have a Betta in a 1.5 gal tank. I have always had a filter on it since that's what I was told to do if you didn't leave him in a little bowl. So now do I take the filter out? Meaning I would have to change 100% water each week? Or keep the filter in, and try to get it cycled. Which I am in the process of trying to do on a 10 gal since I never knew before the 10 gal what cycling a tank even was.

It is such a good feeling to have a new member in the family! I was not daunted by the loss of Zen, merely set back. He showed me something that I hadn't known before: that I was deeply fascinated by these gorgeous and engaging little fish. I had to try again.

I lost two of my bettas earlier this year to mystery illnesses. I have one young female crowntail left and and an empty nukked tank and heater and Im feeling ready to get another betta. Im not sure if I want a male or female. I thought I read once if you have a female and male in tanks next to each other the female can get gravid and egg bound. But dont they get eggy weither or not there is a male around? The female I lost this year was also younger and next to a male and I never saw her look...

So- with all my fish drama I had my boys seperated for awhile. Then I slowly put them all back in the divided. Now they've been all 3 in the divided for 2 days. They are pretty stressed out.
Before all the fights I couldn't really tell if they could even see each other - now I know they can. They flare at each other all the time and they are all really sketchy.
How long should I give them to see if they are going to get used to having a shodowy neighbour before I pull...

I have a question about water changes for bettas. My boyfriend and I both have bettas. I have kept mine in 2 and his are 1 & 2 gal. I have read over and over that you need to change the water in that size tank (in uncycled tanks) at least every week. I do it about every 4-5 days. My boyfriend got his fish from a small non chain pet store and the owner told him she only changes her bettas bowl (looks to me like its less then one gal) every 4-6 weeks!!!! H?ave you all seen those floating logs for bettas? They look really good.Some people I've talked to sad theirs loved the log.Anyway I got to thinking...I would need 7 of those things for my bettas.So I got to thinking.I took the plastic mesh and cut it to size.Bought osme more of the plastic tiny cable ties.And made my own logs.My guys love swimming through them.I added a strand of anacharis through the cave to help weigh it down some.

Fin Rot?

My betta's fins have been deteriorating very quickly. I put him on M2 but that didn't help at all. I'm not sure if this is fin rot or if its something else? My other betta who is in the same tank but in a separate section does not have any signs of fin rot. Not sure if that is revelant, but I thought that I would add it just in case.
